State Legislative Races Update
Here’s some of the latest on legislative races from around the state.
In the 30th Senate District (Brookfield, Canaan, Cornwall, Goshen, Kent, Litchfield, New Milford, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Warren, Washington, Winchester, part of Torrington) Sen. Andrew Roraback is getting a challenger. From a press release:
Winchester Selectman Mike Renzullo announced today that he has formed an Exploratory Committee to run for the State Senate, 30th District, challenging incumbent Senator Andrew Roraback. In making his announcement, Renzullo stated:
“The areas I will stress are:
- Renewable energy, and energy conservation
- Expanding redevelopment efforts in the northwest corner, bringing new businesses to CT
- An increased emphasis on stem cell research, establishing new facilities in northwest CT
Renzullo added, “It’s time our corner of the state is represented as part of the majority in Hartford, where we can be more effective, and really make a difference.”
Roraback defeated his last Democratic opponent in 2006 by a more than 2-1 margin.
There’s a rematch on in the 58th House District (Enfield, but not the part where I live) as Republican Susan Lavelli-Hozempa is looking to challenge Rep. Tallarita for the second election in a row. Lavelli-Hozempa chairs the finance committee on the Board of Education. According to the J-I article, she wants to focus on taxes, business regulation and a three-strikes law. You can read an interview I did with her back in 2006 here. Tallarita easily defeated her that year, by the way.
Finally, in the 60th House District (Windsor, Windsor Locks) the primary seems to be shaping up. Adam Gutcheon, a member of the Windsor school board, is raising money to challenge incumbent Rep. Peggy Sayers (D-Windsor Locks). The convention could be interesting–the article notes that Gutcheon won five of Windsor’s convention delegates, while Sayers has all six from Windsor Locks.
